Great Commission

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20, NLT)

The Great Commission is (or at least should be) the cornerstone of evangelical churches.  As such, we should take a serious look at our churches and ask the following question: are we really doing what is says?  Some churches place a strong emphasis on evangelism and do whatever it takes to share to Good News.  That is great, but is teaching and training young disciples neglected?  Other churches place a strong emphasis on the teaching ministries and desire to see people grow in thie Christian walks.  Again, that is to be applauded; however, the focus sometimes shifts to the people within the church and those who do not know Christ are effectively forgotten.

The above passage from Matthew says “make disciples.”  To do this, we are to share the Good News and baptize those who put their faith and trust in Christ.  We are then to teach these new disciples so that they can learn and grow in their faith.  It really is not an “either/or” scenario, but is “both/and.”  True discipleship is, at base, a two-part process.  Are focusing on both parts?

My birthday is now only a week away. If you still need gift ideas, here are a few to consider:

I’m sure I could come up with more if you need ideas. :-)

UPDATE (1/20/11): It’s funny to go back and look at some of these old posts.  I did get the Spamalot tickets.  I laughed non-stop for 3 hours straight.  I you are a Monty Python fan, it is a MUST SEE.

Get real

Anne Jackson’s latest blog post was about seeing Tedd Haggard recently on Oprah. The point she focuses on is that “so many times we feel like we can’t discuss our brokenness with other believers.” Sad. That is part of why we are doing the next series at Freedom Church, called “We Bare All.” I am personally VERY pumped about this series. I mean, isn’t it past time we broke down the facade and got real with each other? We’ve all got baggage; let’s start dealing with it. Please join us at Barber Middle School in Acworth starting this Sunday.

This n that

Yet again, I have become inconsistent with my blogging. Of course, if I am consistently inconsistent, does that in a way make me consistent? Hmm… Dunno. :-) I guess I’ll just throw our random thoughts this time.

* I’m glad American Idol is back. As of right now, I like the girl that looks like she should be on L.A. Ink, the blind guy, and the guy whose wife died. One guy reminded me of a nerdy version of my friend, Drew, because of his sense of humor and mannerisms. He’s the one that told Simon he thought about singing “God Save the Queen.”

* Speaking of L.A. Ink, Kat Von D is one of the coolest women in the world. She has an artist named Corey that works with her, but I think she needs to be friends with another Corey.

* I’ve become addicted to Twitter. If you haven’t tried it, DO IT! Follow me (ctutor) and I’ll follow you and we can waste a lot of time and text messages together. Come on! It’ll be great!

* My TiVo has been working in overdrive lately. I have series that have been recording for a while, but now I’m getting hooked on some of the new ones as well. For example, have you seen Leverage? I’m loving it. I know a lot of people that watch the Office and quite a few that watch 30 Rock, but have you seen Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother? Funny stuff (especially BBT).

Okay, I think I’m going to go watch some TV. I’ll try to be more consistent…or not…or…something.
